The first step in any decision to file a claim for your damage is to talk to your Agent. If you don't know who are agent is, your contractor/medic can help. Some insurance companies don't have local agents.
Every claim starts with filing a claim. Your contractor/medic can help advise you or answer your questions regarding repairs, but we cannot file a claim on your behalf. Your agent may be able to help, but most often filing the claim must be done by the policyholder.
When you have completed filing of your claim with your insurance company the adjuster will assign you a claim number. This information is needed for every communication with your adjuster. The insurance company will most likely send you an email with this information.
If possible when it is save to do so, take photos of the damage to share with the adjuster and the contractor/medic if needed. Most insurance companies will assign an adjuster to conduct a site visit, but your photos might come in handy.
Most insurance policiies carry a deductible provision. You will be responsible to pay for a portion of the repairs out of pocket. Contractors are not allowed to waive, absorb, or offset your deductible as a part of the claim process.
While you are waiting for your insurance company to settle your claim, this is a great time to interview contractors and decide who you would like to perform the repairs. Having a contractor present during inspections may help in the claim process as the adjuster and the contractor will then have an opportunity to discuss the scope of repairs and reach an agreement on the cost to repair. All of our contractor/medics have years of experience with insurance claims and are well equipped to assist you through this entire process.
